Wolves are moving swiftly in the January transfer market to bolster their squad, with manager Vitor Pereira keen to strengthen his defensive options.
TBR Football understands that the Old Gold are closing in on a deal for Emmanuel Agbadou from Stade de Reims. The central defender is much-needed following the departures of Max Kilman to West Ham last summer and the season-ending injury to Yerson Mosquera in September. However, Wolves are not stopping there. Despite Agbadou’s imminent arrival, the club is eyeing further reinforcements, with Chelsea’s Renato Veiga now a top target.
A report from The Daily Mail suggests that Wolves are interested in signing the Portugal international to provide additional depth in defence. Veiga, who only moved to Chelsea in a £12m deal from FC Basel last July, has struggled for regular game time under Enzo Maresca. The 21-year-old has made just one Premier League start, and TBR Football understands that he is growing frustrated with his lack of opportunities at Stamford Bridge.
Despite his recent move to west London, The Daily Mail reports that Veiga could leave Chelsea permanently this winter, with clubs such as VfB Stuttgart, Napoli, and Juventus also keeping a close eye on his situation. Bournemouth are also interested in the versatile defender, who can play both centre-back and full-back. However, Bournemouth would only be able to complete a permanent transfer if they can resolve their loan arrangement with Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Renato Veiga’s potential move to Wolves has gained further credibility with praise from experienced coach Roberto Martinez. The former Belgium and Portugal manager, who has worked with Veiga at international level, praised the young defender’s maturity and personality. Speaking after Portugal’s 1-1 UEFA Nations League draw against Croatia, Martinez said: “Seeing a player like Renato Veiga, who is playing for the national team for the third time, shows great personality.”
If Veiga’s situation at Chelsea doesn’t improve this month, he could well push for a move to Molineux, where Wolves are also reportedly interested in adding Hakim Ziyech from Galatasaray.
