Wolverhampton Wanderers are poised for a pivotal January transfer window as they look to stave off relegation from the Premier League. Sources close to GIVEMESPORT suggest the Midlands club could make a move for Auxerre’s Clement Akpa to bolster their defensive ranks, potentially marking their second signing of the winter window.
Wolves endured a disastrous start to the season, failing to win any of their first 10 league games. A brief revival in November saw them record consecutive victories, but that momentum was abruptly halted by four consecutive defeats, leading to the sacking of Gary O’Neil. The club turned to Vitor Pereira, whose appointment has brought renewed optimism. Under Pereira’s stewardship, Wolves have secured seven points from nine games, climbing out of the relegation zone for only the second time this campaign.
Despite this improvement, Pereira is reportedly eager to reinforce his squad for the second half of the season, with defensive additions a priority.
Defensive Reinforcements on the Radar
Sources have indicated that Wolves are actively exploring the transfer market for another centre-back to address their defensive vulnerabilities. Clement Akpa, a 23-year-old defender currently plying his trade with Auxerre in Ligue 1, has emerged as a strong candidate.
Akpa’s statistics this season underline his potential. The defender has made 15 appearances, ranking third in his squad for clearances per game (3.5) and fourth for aerial duels won per game (1.1). His versatility, which allows him to operate at both centre-back and left-back, makes him an attractive option for Wolves, particularly as cover for Rayan Aït-Nouri.
Akpa was instrumental in Auxerre’s promotion from Ligue 2 last season, and although his current side sit comfortably in ninth place, Wolves are believed to be monitoring his situation closely.
Ligue 1 Focus
This would not be Wolves’ first foray into the French market this winter. The club is already close to securing the services of Emmanuel Agbadou from Reims for a reported £16.5 million. Despite this significant outlay, sources suggest Wolves remain open to adding another Ligue 1 defender if the financial terms align with their plans.
Other names have also been linked, including Kevin Danso of Lens, described as a “prime” target, though the former Southampton defender reportedly harboured doubts about a move to Molineux. Rennes’ Christopher Wooh has also been highlighted as a potential recruit.
