NafisaBuendia Could Shine Elsewhere as Aston Villa Fringe Role Persists, Says Ian Darke
Emiliano Buendia is tipped to become a “coveted player” at a lower-tier Premier League club or in the Championship if he opts to leave Aston Villa, according to respected commentator Ian Darke.
The creative midfielder endured a lengthy spell on the sidelines with injury last season. However, despite returning to fitness, he has found opportunities scarce under Unai Emery, as speculation grows over a possible January departure.
Leeds United have emerged as potential suitors, with the prospect of a reunion with former boss Daniel Farke reportedly on the cards. Yet, any move to Elland Road remains far from guaranteed at this stage (TEAMtalk, 31 December).
“Buendia has played in the Premier League and Championship and he’s a really good creative player. It’s just a shame for him that Aston Villa have so much talent that he’s consigned to the bench,” said Darke in an exclusive interview with Villa News.
“A loan away to a big club in the Championship or even further down the Premier League could suit him, but then Villa might not want to release many from their squad when they’re going to advance further in the Champions League.
“He’s been linked with Leeds United – a loan there would be perfect for minutes, getting his confidence back as presumably a starter and a coveted player.”
Buendia’s situation highlights the struggles of a player trying to regain momentum after a significant injury at the peak of his career.
The 28-year-old was an integral part of Villa’s side during the 2022/23 season, featuring in every Premier League match. This followed an impressive debut campaign at Villa Park after signing from Norwich City, where he worked under Farke.
Now, with Aston Villa making strides in Europe under Emery, Buendia finds himself on the periphery. He is yet to log more than 15 minutes in a league match this season but could have a chance to impress in Friday’s FA Cup tie against West Ham United (10 January).
Meanwhile, Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings is also awaiting clarity over his future.
