NafisaKonsa Faces Scrutiny After Shaky Display in Villa’s Win Over Leipzig
Ezri Konsa, typically one of Aston Villa’s most dependable players, may have given manager Unai Emery something to ponder after a shaky performance during the 3-2 victory over RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Tuesday, 10 December.
Emery opted to start Konsa at right-back, pushing Matty Cash into a more advanced role. While the tactical experiment ultimately worked with goals from John McGinn, Jhon Duran, and Ross Barkley securing the three points, Konsa’s display raised questions about his suitability in that position.
Statistically, the England international had 68 touches, an 89% passing accuracy, and completed 50% of his long balls. However, Sofascore data also revealed he lost possession seven times, was dribbled past once, and won just one ground duel, leaving Villa vulnerable on his side of the pitch.
The defensive lapses were particularly glaring in Leipzig’s two goals. The first came from a miscommunication between Konsa and goalkeeper Emi Martinez, while the second resulted from a long ball into Konsa’s area that he failed to deal with effectively.
Under Emery, Villa have relied heavily on attacking fullbacks, but Konsa offered little offensively, recording an expected assists (xA) of just 0.01. His struggles contributed to a defensive performance that left some fans concerned despite the win.
With Nottingham Forest next on 14 December, Emery will likely reconsider his defensive lineup. A return to Matty Cash in the right-back role could be on the cards as Villa seek to tighten their defense and maintain momentum in both the Premier League and Europe.
Though Konsa remains a reliable centre-back, his role on the flank may need to be rethought to ensure Villa continue their strong form this season.
