Tommy Watson has expressed frustration over his wait for a first-team chance at Sunderland but commended the club for their development of young players after his starring performance against Stoke City.
The 18-year-old Sunderland fan scored twice in the 2-1 victory at the Stadium of Light on Saturday and could have added more, missing a sitter and hitting the post during the game.
“I think I’ll just need a few hours to let it sink in, to be honest,” Watson said after the match. “The main thing is that we’ve picked up a well-needed three points, well-deserved three points. It gives us a little bit of momentum to kick on this three-game week, where hopefully we come away with nine points.”
Reflecting on scoring for his boyhood club, Watson added: “It’s been my dream, to be honest. I couldn’t have really pictured it any better after today. I like to think I’ve taken my opportunity well, but I’m just focusing on my game-by-game and looking to stay in that team.”
Watson’s path to the first team has not been without challenges. After making his debut under Tony Mowbray in 2023, he had to bide his time, initially overshadowed by Jack Clarke’s form and later Romaine Mundle, who recently suffered a muscle injury.
Starting Sunderland’s last four games under Régis Le Bris, Watson admitted: “That’s what I’m all about. I think I’m now ready to start contributing with goals and assists. I want to be the main man here and help the team in any way I can.”
While waiting for his senior breakthrough, Watson impressed for Graeme Murty’s under-21s, cementing his reputation as one of Sunderland’s brightest prospects.
