Three points on Saturday provided a much-needed boost, and tonight’s clash offers Sunderland the chance to build on that result and gather momentum ahead of the hectic Christmas schedule.
Chris Mepham, who missed the weekend’s game due to suspension, is expected to return, while Luke O’Nien, reportedly sidelined by illness, is likely to remain out of contention. This simplifies Tony Mowbray’s defensive selection, at least for now.
Elsewhere, Patrick Roberts’ resurgence in form was a highlight on Saturday. However, Wilson Isidor’s performance raised concerns. Struggling with cramp late on, there’s a possibility he might sit this one out. For now, though, I’m playing it safe and keeping him in my predicted XI.
Goalkeeper: Anthony Patterson
Anthony Patterson is set to continue in goal, but questions remain over his handling. His failure to push Saturday’s conceded goal out for a corner, coupled with a palmed save that almost caused further problems, shows this is an area that needs work.
Defence: Trai Hume, Chris Mepham, Dan Ballard, Dennis Cirkin
Chris Mepham’s return is almost certain, given his standing as the team’s best defender. Dan Ballard is expected to replace O’Nien, whose illness spares Mowbray a difficult decision. At left-back, Dennis Cirkin could come in for Alese, who looked shaky in spells during the weekend’s win.
Mowbray’s preference for a settled side might make Ballard’s inclusion noteworthy, as O’Nien has been a consistent figure in recent line-ups.
Midfield: Dan Neil, Chris Rigg, Jobe Bellingham
The midfield trio is likely to remain unchanged. Dan Neil, impressive on Saturday after a mixed season, should keep his place. “He had one of his best games against Stoke,” and will aim to carry that form forward.
Chris Rigg might need a rest soon, but Mowbray could start him again with the intention of an early substitution. Meanwhile, Jobe Bellingham will look for a stronger showing after a subdued performance last time out.
Attack: Patrick Roberts, Wilson Isidor, Tommy Watson
Patrick Roberts, instrumental against Stoke, is a certainty. Tommy Watson, too, should retain his spot.
As for Wilson Isidor, his fitness is a concern. While he remains in this prediction, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Mayenda or Connolly step in, especially given Isidor’s struggles late in the weekend’s match.
With Saturday’s victory serving as a foundation, Sunderland now have the opportunity to gather steam. A strong showing tonight could set the tone for the challenging fixtures ahead.
