Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White added insult to injury for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana by admitting he didn’t expect his goal to find the back of the net during Forest’s shock 3-2 victory at Old Trafford.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side delivered a stunning performance to claim a deserved win, with goals from Nikola Milenkovic, Gibbs-White, and Chris Wood sealing the upset. For United, it marked a second consecutive loss under Ruben Amorim, leaving the Red Devils reeling in the bottom half of the table.
Gibbs-White’s goal came with a stroke of fortune. His scuffed shot from 20 yards seemed innocuous, but Onana inexplicably failed to deal with it, allowing Forest to restore their lead early in the second half.
When asked by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp whether he thought the effort would result in a goal, Gibbs-White gave a brutally honest assessment:
“I didn’t at all, to be fair. I don’t want to discredit Onana, he’s a great goalkeeper. Incredible keeper. But when I first saw the scuff I thought, ‘ah, he’s going to pick it up.’ You count them all, don’t you! I’m happy to contribute.”
The 23-year-old wasn’t finished there. Gibbs-White also delivered the pinpoint cross that led to Forest’s third goal, with Chris Wood heading home to secure the three points. Onana’s misjudgment on the delivery compounded his nightmare evening.
Speaking after the game, Wood was full of praise for his teammate’s delivery. “Morgs [Gibbs-White] has put in a fantastic delivery; he’s got quality, the boy,” said the New Zealand striker. “It’s just about finding areas to cause confusion. Everybody knows the emphasis on set-pieces these days. It’s huge, a big avenue for and against. We did well today.”
The victory saw Forest climb to fifth in the Premier League table, just two points behind Manchester City, while United languish in 13th.
United manager Ruben Amorim didn’t hide his frustration after the game, openly criticizing his side’s lack of creativity and defensive frailty.
“Tough game. We started really bad; the first play, we suffered a goal, and then it’s hard to fight back,” said Amorim. “We controlled the game for periods, had situations, but lacked quality. We have to win games to improve confidence and the team.”
For Forest, it was a night to remember, while for United, it was another painful chapter in an increasingly challenging campaign.
