NafisaNewcastle United are reportedly ready to focus their resources on securing Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton on a free transfer, according to Alan Nixon.
Writing on his Patreon account on 29 December, Nixon revealed that the Magpies are unwilling to pay “a big fee” for the 27-year-old striker in January. Instead, the club is expected to channel their funds into “a major contract offer” to sign Calvert-Lewin when his contract expires in June.
Everton fans appear to be bracing themselves for the departure of the one-cap England international, who seems disinclined to extend his stay at Goodison Park. The former Sheffield United forward has been linked with an exit for months, and speculation has included interest from European clubs. However, a move to Newcastle could prove tempting, allowing him to remain in the Premier League.
If Eddie Howe’s side decide to go all-in on Calvert-Lewin in January, a deal might be finalised swiftly. However, the striker’s recent form – just two Premier League goals this season – suggests his departure might not be a significant loss for Sean Dyche’s squad on the pitch.
The financial implications, though, are a different story. Losing their starting number nine without receiving a transfer fee would undoubtedly complicate Everton’s plans in the transfer market and add to the challenges already facing the club.
